Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)

At Alde Valley Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their individual needs, has the opportunity to aspire, achieve, and thrive.

Our experienced and caring SEND Team is led by Mrs Claire Wills, SENDCo, and includes dedicated Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs), and Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs). Together, they work to provide personalised support that helps our students build confidence, independence, and lifelong learning skills.

Our Approach

We believe that all young people are entitled to an education that enables them to:

  • Achieve their best

  • Become confident, resilient individuals

  • Make a successful transition into adulthood

Quality First Teaching is at the heart of our provision for all students, including those with SEND. Wherever possible, students are supported in mainstream lessons through high-quality, differentiated teaching. Our SEND team works closely with teaching staff to ensure strategies are tailored to each learner’s needs.

Support and Provision

Support for students on the SEND register may include:

  • In-class support from LSAs or HLTAs

  • Targeted 1:1 or small group interventions

  • Emotional support and mentoring in our Oasis Centre

  • Supervision and support at break and lunchtimes

  • A personalised Learning Passport, co-created with students and families

Students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) receive annual reviews involving families and relevant professionals.

Working Together

We work closely with:

  • Primary schools to support smooth transition into Year 7

  • Post-16 providers to ensure students are prepared for their next steps

  • External specialists, such as educational psychologists, therapists, and advisory teachers

  • Governors, who help oversee and evaluate SEND provision

Our SEND support is regularly reviewed and adapted to meet the changing needs of our students.
